Geomatics and Environmental Engineering has been published since 2007. It is a natural continuation of two other journals which were also published by AGH University of Science and Technology Press between 1993 and 2006: Geodezja (English translate of title: Geodesy; ISSN: 1234-6608) and Inżynieria Środowiska (English translate of title: Environmental Engineering; ISSN: 1426-2908).

The first Editor-in-Chief of Geomatics and Environmental Engineering was Professor Ryszard Hycner, who previously held the same position in Geodezja since 2003. He wad editor-in-chief until 31 December 2011.
In the years 2012-2020, the Editor-in-Chief was Professor Piotr Parzych, who introduced the journal to Scopus in 2019.
On 1 January 2021, Professor Agnieszka Bieda took up this position. In the years 2012-2020, she was the Managing Editor of Geomatics and Environmental Engineering.
